Cover Letters Need a Facelift
August 2, 2024

For as long as I can remember, the cover letter has been a staple in the job hunt. Those days are over. Cover letter have gone the way of the blackberry and here's what you can do about it.

Ah, the cover letter. Does anyone else just despise sitting down the write a cover letter? I can't be alone here. Like, what even goes in there?

As an HR expert with 15 years of experience, I can tell you that cover letters so serve a purpose. The purpose was/is to express interest in the role (duh- if I apply, I'm interested), and to add a personal "flair" to the resume that would tell the receiver all about the applicant and thier greatness.

Here's the issue- potential employers, whoever it is that gets the resume, is reviewing a lot of resumes and cover letters are just more reading. People are busy, we know this.

At SOS, we value understanding more about people and adding personal flair, we just know that we need to do it in a way that engages the audience (AKA- the employer) and reduces the time they need to spend reading. When we use the SOS profile in place of the cover letter, we are doing just that- saving time.

SOS doesn't expressly have a "cover letter" section, however it prompts users to answer questions that build out cover letter-esque information. We then take that info and deliver it to the employer in an engaging way. VIOLA! Time saved, engagement in the information, and a better chance of showcasing your personality.

Now, go be awesome.
