Why traditional resumes aren't getting attention and what to do about it We all have one- a couple of pages, typed up on our desktop, listing our qualities and experience in chronological order... this is what we call a resume. We then use this resume as our best attempt to land the job of our dreams...Are we for real? This black and white, boring-as-hell to read, page is what we use to show case all our uniqueness, skills, experiences, and personality. We use this boring old page in an attempt to get that job that will change our lives?! A bit silly, no? Traditional resumes are a problem for todays hiring managers, business owners, and recruiters alike. All business owners and leaders are trying their absolute darnedest to find the best talent that will help drive their organizations. On the flip side, all the talented potential employees are trying their darnedest to land positions they love. When employees apply for positions with their traditional resume, the person on the other end of that job ad is trying to a) read all of those boring pages with some level of focus (usually requiring snacks, naps or caffeine to get through), and b) trying to decipher if the resume writer has potential or not (real hard to do using the aforementioned black and white boring-ness). It is a missmatch of effort and energy. All we want as recruiters (and anyone hiring) is to get a good, well rounded idea of who someone is. We want to know about them as people, we want to know what they can do, and why they want to be doing it. When I developed Stand Out Staff it was done so with this exact mission- let's close that gap between the employee trying to stand out in a competition for their dream job and the Employer trying to find top talent. Let's make resume reviewing more effective and less of a YAWN-FEST (take it from me, an HR expert with 15 years of experience, traditional resumes are, in-fact, a yawn-fest). So, if employees actually want to Stand Out in the competition for their dream job, what better way to do it than to share a personalized website that showcases them and their achievements in an interesting and engaging way? No hiring manager is sleeping through the review of you SOS page- that I can assure you. Traditional resumes get sent into the abyss to be added to the stack of other black and white pages of doom. You, potential employee with a dream, are not standing out. Let's think of it this way- the yellow pages tell us a business name, but a website tells us all about that business and why they are great. In this example, your resume is the yellow pages and your SOS profile is your website. My friends- Sell Yourselves! You are unique, talented, and amazing in your own right. Build yourself the website you deserve. Now go be amazing. |
